Studies found that SARS-CoV-2 can persist on solid surfaces for 2 to 3 days. In order to prevent the spread of disease and properly follow the guidance of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) we need to understand the difference between “Cleaning” and “Disinfecting”.
Cleaning is the removal of soils and micro-organisms (germs). All soils contain micro-organisms and it is essential that you remove the soils before you can disinfect the surfaces. You cannot disinfect something that is not clean. Cleaning all surfaces is the first step to preventing the spread of disease.
Disinfecting is the killing and removal of the micro-organism (germ) from a clean surface. By killing germs after you clean you prevent the spread of disease and lower the chance of infection.
The CDC recommends a two-step approach to disease control. First, clean all surfaces to remove soils followed by disinfection with a product registered on the EPA list of approved disinfectants.
The CDC recommends wiping down high-touch surfaces such as:
- Doorknobs
- Tables and Desks
- Countertops
- Handrails
- Light switches
- Hard-backed chairs
- Phones
- Tablets
- Touch screens
- Remote controls
- Keyboards
- Handles
- Toilets
